What is Fertility Preservation?

Pause Your Biological Clock — On Your Terms

Fertility preservation is the process of collecting, freezing, and storing reproductive cells — eggs, sperm, or embryos — so they can be used later for pregnancy. It's the most powerful way to extend your reproductive window and protect your family-building options regardless of when life takes you there.

Women are born with a finite number of eggs, and egg quality and quantity naturally decline with age — accelerating sharply after 35. Fertility preservation using vitrification (rapid flash-freezing) stops the biological clock, allowing your eggs or embryos to remain at their current quality indefinitely until you're ready.

For men, sperm quality can be affected by medical treatments, surgeries, or occupational hazards. Sperm freezing takes just one visit and offers long-term protection of fertility for any future use.

❄️
The Vitrification Advantage: Unlike old slow-freeze methods that caused damaging ice crystals, vitrification flash-freezes biological material in milliseconds — achieving 95%+ survival rates and no loss in egg or embryo quality after storage of any duration.
❄️ How Vitrification Works
1
Cryoprotectant Loading
Cells are treated with special cryoprotectant agents (CPAs) that replace water inside the cell and prevent ice crystal formation
2
Ultra-Rapid Flash Freezing
Cells are plunged directly into liquid nitrogen (-196°C) at >20,000°C/min — faster than any ice crystals can form
3
Cryostorage (Liquid Nitrogen)
Cells stored in individually labelled vitrification devices in monitored liquid nitrogen tanks at -196°C — indefinitely stable
4
Warming (When Ready)
When you decide to use them, cells are rapidly warmed at a controlled rate, achieving 95%+ survival rates with full function restored
5
Use in IVF / ICSI / FET
Warmed eggs undergo ICSI fertilisation; embryos used in FET cycle; sperm used in IUI or ICSI as needed
🏆 No quality loss regardless of storage duration

Is It Right for You?

Who Should Consider Fertility Preservation?

You don't have to be facing a medical crisis to consider preserving your fertility. Many people choose to freeze as a proactive step to protect their future.

🎗️
Cancer Patients
Chemotherapy and radiation can permanently damage eggs and sperm. Freezing before treatment is a critical window — often called oncofertility — that every young cancer patient should explore.
👩‍💼
Career-Focused Women
Women who want to delay pregnancy for career, education, or life goals can "bank" their younger, higher-quality eggs now, improving their chances of pregnancy when they're ready.
📉
Low Ovarian Reserve (Low AMH)
Women diagnosed with premature ovarian insufficiency or rapidly declining AMH levels should consider egg banking urgently to capture the most viable eggs before further decline.
🎗️
Genetic Conditions
Carriers of BRCA1/2 mutations or Turner's syndrome, or those with a family history of early menopause, benefit greatly from early fertility preservation as a precaution.
⚕️
Men Before Medical Procedures
Men scheduled for chemotherapy, testicular surgery, vasectomy, or high-risk occupations (radiation exposure) should bank sperm as insurance before any procedure that may affect fertility.
🌍
Long-Term Separation
Military personnel, seafarers, or anyone facing long periods away from their partner can freeze sperm or embryos so treatment can proceed at any time in the future.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the most common questions about fertility preservation at Matrushri.

What is the best age to freeze eggs?+
The ideal age for egg freezing is between 25 and 35 years. Before 35, egg quality and quantity are typically at their best, resulting in more eggs retrieved per cycle and higher post-thaw success rates. Freezing after 37 is still possible but yields fewer eggs and lower success rates. Early consultation and AMH testing is recommended for any woman considering this option.
How many eggs should I freeze?+
For a good chance of one live birth, most fertility specialists recommend having 10–15 mature frozen eggs if you are under 35, and 15–20 if you are 35–37. This may require 1–2 stimulation cycles. Your AMH and AFC scan will help predict how many eggs we can expect to retrieve per cycle.
How long can eggs, sperm, and embryos be stored?+
Scientifically, vitrified material has been shown to remain viable indefinitely — pregnancies have been reported from embryos stored for 20+ years. In practice, Indian regulations (ICMR guidelines) allow storage for up to 10 years, with periodic consent renewals. Our team keeps you updated on your storage status and renewal requirements.
Is egg freezing painful?+
The stimulation injections involve daily self-administered subcutaneous injections — similar to insulin injections — which are minimally uncomfortable. The egg retrieval procedure (OPU) is performed under IV sedation and takes only 10–15 minutes; most women feel no pain during the procedure and experience mild cramping for 1–2 days afterwards. Most women return to normal activities within 1–2 days.
Does freezing eggs or embryos guarantee a pregnancy later?+
Fertility preservation does not guarantee pregnancy — it preserves your options. Success depends on the age at freezing, number and quality of frozen eggs/embryos, the uterine environment at the time of transfer, and other factors. However, it significantly improves your chances compared to using fresh eggs at an older age. Our team gives you a realistic probability estimate based on your specific profile.
Can I use frozen eggs or embryos at any time?+
Yes. Your frozen material is stored under your name and consent, and you can initiate a thaw cycle at any time as long as the samples are in valid storage. For egg freezing, you will need to come back for an IVF/ICSI cycle to fertilise the eggs when you are ready. For embryo freezing, a simpler Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET) cycle is used.
What happens to my frozen material if I no longer need it?+
If you no longer wish to use your preserved material, you have several options: continued storage, donation to another patient (with full consent and legal process), donation for research and training purposes, or compassionate disposal. All decisions are entirely yours and documented in writing. Matrushri guides you through the appropriate legal and ethical process.
Is fertility preservation covered by insurance?+
In India, fertility preservation for medical indications (e.g., cancer treatment) may be partially covered by some group insurance policies. Social egg freezing (for non-medical reasons) is generally not covered. We recommend checking with your insurer. Matrushri offers flexible payment plans to make the procedure accessible, and our coordinators can help you understand your options.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer at 29. My oncologist referred me to Matrushri before starting chemo. The whole egg freezing cycle was completed in 12 days. Three years later, after finishing treatment, we thawed the eggs, fertilised them via ICSI, and transferred one blastocyst. Our daughter is 2 now.
