Understanding Each IVF Transfer Type

IVF due dates are calculated differently depending on the embryo's development stage at the time of transfer. Each method uses a precise formula to count back to the equivalent of a natural last menstrual period (LMP) date.

3
🧫
Day 3 Fresh Transfer
Cleavage Stage
EDD = Transfer Date + 263 days
Fresh embryos transferred at the 8-cell cleavage stage, 3 days after egg retrieval. The embryo is at an early division stage and must continue developing in the uterus.
5
🌱
Day 5 Blastocyst
Blastocyst Stage
EDD = Transfer Date + 261 days
The most common and successful transfer type. At Day 5, the embryo has reached blastocyst stage — a more developed form that implants more reliably in the uterine lining.
F
❄️
FET – Frozen Embryo
Frozen Transfer (Day 3 or Day 5)
Same as fresh: Day 3 = +263d | Day 5 = +261d
Frozen Embryo Transfer uses the same formulas as fresh transfers — the embryo's developmental age at freezing (Day 3 or Day 5) determines the calculation, not the thaw date.

👶👶
Twin IVF Pregnancy
Adjusted for Twins
Twin EDD = Standard EDD − 21 days
Twin pregnancies typically reach full term at 37–38 weeks rather than 40 weeks. Our calculator applies the standard twin adjustment to give you a more clinically appropriate due date.
IVF Journey

From Transfer to Due Date — The IVF Timeline

Understanding the key milestones between your embryo transfer and your due date helps you prepare, plan appointments, and celebrate every step of your IVF pregnancy journey.

1
Embryo Transfer Day
The embryo is carefully placed into the uterus via a thin catheter under ultrasound guidance. This is the starting point for your IVF due date calculation — Day 0 of your IVF pregnancy countdown.
Day 0
2
Implantation Window (Days 1–5 Post-Transfer)
The embryo begins to implant into the uterine lining. This is a critical period — rest, hydration, and following your doctor's medication protocol are essential. Avoid strenuous activity.
Days 1–5
3
Beta-hCG Pregnancy Blood Test
Approximately 9–12 days after transfer, a blood test measures hCG levels to confirm pregnancy. A positive result triggers the next phase of monitoring and emotional celebration!
Days 9–12
4
Viability Scan — Heartbeat Confirmed
Around 6–7 weeks from your equivalent LMP date (approximately 4–5 weeks post-transfer), a transvaginal ultrasound confirms the foetal heartbeat and checks for the number of embryos (singleton or twins).
Weeks 6–7
5
First Trimester Nuchal Translucency Scan
Between 11–13 weeks, the NT scan measures the fluid at the back of the baby's neck and screens for chromosomal conditions. At this stage, IVF pregnancies often transition to shared care with an obstetrician.
Weeks 11–13
6
20-Week Anatomy Scan
The most detailed ultrasound of the pregnancy — checks all major organs, confirms due date, and for twins, assesses placental positioning. This is often when many parents find out the baby's sex.
Week 20
7
Your Estimated Due Date
40 weeks (or 37–38 weeks for twins) after your equivalent LMP — your baby's arrival day. Only 5% of babies are born exactly on their EDD, so prepare for a 2-week window on either side.
Week 40 (Twins: Week 37)
Twin IVF Pregnancies

IVF Twin Pregnancies — What You Need to Know

👶👶 Twin Pregnancy After IVF

IVF pregnancies carry a higher chance of twins than natural conception, particularly when multiple embryos are transferred. While twins are a joyful outcome, the pregnancy timeline and monitoring protocol differ significantly from a singleton pregnancy.

Twin pregnancies are considered full term at 37–38 weeks rather than 40 weeks — meaning your IVF due date for twins is adjusted accordingly. Closer monitoring, more frequent scans, and earlier planning for birth are all essential.

~3×

🤱
Twin EDD Formula
Standard EDD minus 21 days
accounts for full term at 37 weeks

Example: If standard EDD is Jan 15,
Twin EDD = Dec 25
📅
More Frequent Monitoring
Twin pregnancies require scans every 2–4 weeks from Week 16 — monitoring growth, placental health, and cervical length more closely than singleton pregnancies.
Frozen Embryo Transfer

FET Due Date — Everything You Need to Know

A Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET) uses embryos that were cryopreserved (frozen) during a previous IVF cycle and thawed for transfer in a later cycle. The due date calculation uses the same formulas as a fresh transfer — based on the embryo's developmental age at freezing.

🔬
FET Day 3 (Frozen Cleavage)
Embryos frozen at Day 3 (cleavage stage) and transferred after thawing. The transfer date is used as Day 3 of embryo development. Due date is calculated the same way as a fresh Day 3 transfer.
EDD = FET Date + 263 days
🌱
FET Day 5 (Frozen Blastocyst)
The most common FET type. Blastocysts frozen at Day 5 are thawed and transferred. The FET date is used as the Day 5 reference point. This is the most accurate and commonly used FET calculation.
EDD = FET Date + 261 days
Scientific Advantage

Why IVF Due Dates Are More Precise

📅
Known Fertilisation Date
In IVF, egg retrieval and fertilisation happen on known, recorded dates — eliminating the uncertainty of when conception occurred in natural pregnancies.
🔬
Precise Embryo Age
The exact developmental stage of the embryo at transfer (Day 3 or Day 5) is documented precisely — allowing a mathematically exact EDD calculation.
📊
No Cycle Variability
Unlike LMP-based calculations that assume a 28-day cycle, IVF dates are independent of your natural cycle length — giving greater inherent accuracy.
🏥
Medically Verified
All IVF timelines are monitored and verified by fertility specialists with real-time ultrasound measurements to confirm gestational development at each stage.
❄️
FET Date Precision
For frozen transfers, the embryo's original developmental age is preserved — so the calculation uses the embryo's actual biological age, not the thaw date.
🌟
Clinically Consistent
These formulas are used by fertility specialists worldwide and align with ACOG (American College of Obstetricians) guidelines for IVF pregnancy dating.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How is an IVF due date different from a natural pregnancy due date?
+
In a natural pregnancy, the due date is estimated from the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP), assuming ovulation occurred around Day 14. In IVF, the fertilisation date and embryo age at transfer are known precisely — making IVF due dates significantly more accurate than LMP-based estimates. The formula accounts for whether the embryo was transferred at Day 3 (cleavage) or Day 5 (blastocyst) stage.
What is the difference between a Day 3 and Day 5 IVF transfer due date?
+
A Day 3 embryo (cleavage stage) is transferred 3 days after egg retrieval. The EDD is calculated by adding 263 days to the transfer date. A Day 5 blastocyst is transferred after a further 2 days of culture in the lab. The EDD is calculated by adding 261 days to the transfer date. Both methods give highly accurate results — the 2-day difference accounts for the embryo's additional development in the laboratory before transfer.
Is the FET due date calculated the same as a fresh transfer?
+
Yes — the FET due date uses exactly the same formula as a fresh transfer, based on the embryo's developmental age at the time it was frozen (Day 3 or Day 5). The thaw date is not relevant to the calculation — what matters is the embryo's biological age. FET Day 5: EDD = FET Date + 261 days. FET Day 3: EDD = FET Date + 263 days.
How is the IVF twin due date calculated?
+
Twin pregnancies are adjusted by subtracting approximately 21 days from the standard 40-week EDD, as twins are typically delivered at 37–38 weeks rather than 40 weeks. Our calculator applies this adjustment automatically when you toggle the twins option. Your clinical team will monitor the pregnancy closely and determine the optimal delivery date based on your specific twin pregnancy type (dichorionic, monochorionic, etc.).
Will my IVF due date change after an ultrasound scan?
+
In most IVF pregnancies, the calculated EDD is very accurate and rarely changes after ultrasound. However, if your first-trimester scan shows a crown-rump length (CRL) that differs significantly from expected values, your doctor may adjust the EDD slightly. Changes of more than 5–7 days in the first trimester are rare in IVF pregnancies because the exact embryo age is known. The scan primarily serves to confirm the IVF-calculated date rather than replace it.
When should I have my first scan after IVF transfer?
+
The first scan is typically scheduled approximately 4–5 weeks after your embryo transfer (equivalent to 6–7 weeks gestation from your LMP-equivalent date). This is when the foetal heartbeat first becomes visible on a transvaginal ultrasound. A positive beta-hCG blood test at 9–12 days post-transfer will precede this scan. Your fertility specialist will advise on the exact timing based on your individual protocol.
